A History of Caring for the Community
1848St. John’s Infirmary – Milwaukee’s first hospital – is established by the Sisters of Charity during a cholera epidemic. "…open to all citizens or strangers without distinction."
1858St. John’s Infirmary becomes St. Mary’s Hospital at Northpoint.
1859St. Mary’s Hospital commits to the underserved: "…to afford relief and suitable care to all classes and denominations regardless of country or color, to all condition of sufferers, mental as well as physical."
2001St. Mary’s Milwaukee and Ozaukee Hospitals merge with Columbia Hospital to become Columbia St. Mary’s Health System.
2005Columbia St. Mary’s breaks ground for new unified 670,000-square foot "hospital of the future," featuring evidence-based design, a 40,000 square foot Cancer Center, Women’s and Specialty Hospital, state-of-the-art surgical and procedure settings, two medical office buildings and three parking structures, as well as a three-story atrium and public concourse with superb views of Lake Michigan.
